If you make weight loss your only focus and goal, Conscious
Eating will feel like another diet and you will become
stuck in the binge/deprivation cycle making permanent weight
loss impossible.
At Conscious Eating the focus is on how you feel and how
your body feels which ironically, results in lasting weight
loss.
Weight loss is not the only measure of success in this program.
As you get more in touch with your body and more accurate
about responding to its needs you will find that food is
not so important and you will slowly return to your natural
size when you are ready. It is important to start measuring
your success based on how you feel about yourself and your
life.
We believe that Unconscious Eating (eating for every other
reason besides physical hunger) leads to weight gain.
Conscious Eating (eating for physical hunger only) leads
to weight loss and weight loss maintenance.
4 parts to Conscious Eating:
- Intention to eat consciously, Choosing to eat when physically
hungry
- Being present with the food - taste the food, enjoy
the experience
- Stop eating when body feels satisfied
- Check in with your body after eating - how does it feel
now, in 20 minutes, after a couple of hours?
The amount of time it will take to fully eat consciously will
depend on
- How long you have been dieting
- How strongly entrenched your diet thinking and beliefs
are
- How long you have been using food to cope with feelings
and stress
- How willing you are to trust yourself and your body
- How much you follow through with your intentions.
Conscious Eating is a process not a goal. A process
has no end, it is made up of many little steps and many little
changes.
Conscious Eating requires that you be in the present.
The focus is not on the past or the future, only what is happening
right now, in this moment. Being in the present is the key
to help you notice when you are feeling hungry and feeling
satisfied.
As you go through this process your weight may fluctuate especially
as you are normalizing food and learning to eat consciously.
As you learn to differentiate between physical hungers and
other hungers and learn how to respond accurately to all your
hungers, the weight loss will follow.
Conscious Eating supports slow weight loss with the
knowledge that the slower you take it off the more likely
it will be that your weight loss is permanent. The quick weight
loss that results from dieting is really water loss. It represents
your body's natural response to starvation or not having enough
energy. When glucose (energy) is not available, your body
will begin converting the protein in muscles into valuable
energy for your body. This is called "muscle wasting".
Muscle is made up mostly of water (70%). When muscle cells
are destroyed, water is released and eventually excreted -
there is the quick weight loss.
Conscious Eating means letting go of all diet behaviors,
thoughts, and beliefs which are deeply ingrained in your own
beliefs and attitudes about food and weight loss. Letting
go will happen over time as you uncover more and more diet
thoughts and beliefs. Many of them will be released in the
first workshop and in Phase I of the long term program. But
this awareness will always be a part of your Conscious Eating
process.
